Bathrooms deserve the most attention
Bathrooms combine water, smooth surfaces, and stepping in and out. That makes them one of the most important rooms to review for fall risk.
Lighting
- Add bright, low-glare lighting.
- Install a nightlight along the path to the bathroom.
- Make sure switches are easy to reach.
Flooring
- Use non-slip flooring or secured mats.
- Remove rugs that slide or curl.
- Wipe up water promptly.
Grab bars
- Install grab bars where they genuinely help with sitting, standing, and steadying.
- Placement should fit the person and the bathroom, not just look right.
- Some placements require professional judgment about wall structure and load.
Shower and tub access
- Consider a shower seat and a handheld shower head.
- Check that the threshold is low or flush where possible.
- Use a non-slip mat inside the shower or tub.
Toilets and storage
- A comfort-height toilet can be easier to use.
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach so there is no reaching or balancing on shelves.
