Accessibility
We want this website to be usable by the older adults and families we serve, including visitors who rely on assistive technology. Here is what we have built in, where we know we can still improve, and how to tell us about a problem.
Our Commitment
Many of the people who visit this website are older adults or family members helping someone they care about. We want this site to be easy to read and easy to use for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, magnify their screen, or navigate with a keyboard.
We treat accessibility as ongoing work rather than a one-time project. As we add pages and tools, we try to check them against the same goals described below.
What We Have Built In
These are the accessibility features currently built into the site:
- Text sized large enough to read comfortably, with body text set at roughly 18 pixels.
- Strong color contrast between text and background, with dark text on light backgrounds.
- A visible "Skip to main content" link for people who navigate with a keyboard.
- Every page can be reached and operated using only a keyboard, with visible focus indicators.
- Forms use real labels tied to their input fields so screen readers can announce them correctly.
- Meaningful images have descriptive alternative text, and decorative icons are hidden from screen readers.
- Interactive tools such as the Home Safety Checklist and the pricing estimator work with keyboard and touch input.
- Pages are built to avoid horizontal scrolling and to reflow cleanly on phones and tablets.
- Each page has a unique title and description so it can be understood out of context.
Known Limitations
We are honest about where we still have work to do. Third-party content, embedded tools, and documents created by others may not meet the same standard we hold ourselves to. Some interactive tools may change their layout slightly as we improve them.
We are continuing to review and improve the site. If you run into something that does not work well for you, we would genuinely like to know.
Standards We Aim For
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, as our reference point. These guidelines are published by the World Wide Web Consortium and are widely used to describe what accessible digital content looks like.
This page describes our own effort and intent. It is not a certification, and it is not a guarantee that every part of the site is free of accessibility barriers.
Tell Us About a Barrier
If any part of this website is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. Describe the page and what happened, and let us know how you would prefer to be contacted. If a form on this site is not usable for you, you can always reach us by phone instead.
We will do our best to provide the information you need in another format and to fix the underlying problem.
