Why bathrooms need special attention
Bathrooms combine water, smooth surfaces, and the motions of stepping in and out, sitting and standing. That makes them one of the most important rooms to review for fall risk.
Lighting
Add bright, low-glare lighting and a nightlight along the path to the bathroom. Make sure switches are easy to reach, including from inside the shower if possible.
Flooring
Use non-slip flooring or secured mats. Remove rugs that slide or curl. Wipe up water promptly. Even a small amount of water on a smooth floor can cause a serious fall.
Grab bars
Install grab bars where they genuinely help with sitting, standing, and steadying. Common locations are next to the toilet and along the shower or tub wall. Placement should fit the person and the bathroom, and some installations require professional judgment about wall structure.
Shower and tub access
Consider a shower seat and a handheld shower head. Check that the threshold is low or flush where possible. Use a non-slip mat inside the shower or tub. If stepping over a tub wall has become difficult, a walk-in shower may be the safer path.
Toilets and storage
A comfort-height toilet can be easier to use. Keep frequently used items within easy reach so there is no reaching, stretching, or balancing on shelves or the edge of the tub.
A practical order
Start with the least expensive, highest-impact changes: lighting, rugs, and non-slip mats. Then address grab bars and shower access, which may involve professional installation.
