Stairs are a top fall risk
Stairs demand balance, clear vision, and a secure handhold. Small issues become serious on stairs, so they are worth reviewing carefully.
Handrails
- Make sure handrails are secure and run the full length of the stairs.
- Where possible, add a rail on both sides.
- Check that rails are comfortable to grip and not loose.
Lighting
- Add switches at the top and bottom of every staircase.
- Make lighting bright and even, with no shadows on the treads.
- Add a nightlight for after-dark trips.
Tread visibility and condition
- Add contrast strips to stair edges so each step is easy to see.
- Repair loose, cracked, or squeaking boards.
- Make sure carpet is flat and securely attached.
Clutter and clear passage
- Keep stairs completely clear of objects.
- Do not store items on the stairs, even temporarily.
When stairs become too much
If stairs are no longer manageable despite improvements, it may be time to consider whether the main living areas can move to one level, or whether other support is needed.
