Start with the areas that cause the most problems
You do not have to remodel the whole house at once. Start with the places where falls and difficulty are most likely: entryways, bathrooms, and stairs.
Entryways and access
- Add sturdy handrails on both sides of exterior steps.
- Repair loose boards, cracked walkways, and uneven thresholds.
- Improve lighting at every entrance.
- Consider lever-style door handles, which are easier to operate.
Bathrooms
- Install grab bars where they genuinely help, not just where they look right.
- Improve lighting and reduce glare.
- Add non-slip flooring or mats that stay flat.
- Consider a shower seat and handheld shower head.
Stairs and hallways
- Secure handrails and make sure they run the full length of the stairs.
- Add light switches at the top and bottom of every staircase.
- Remove clutter and loose rugs from pathways.
Kitchen and living areas
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
- Improve task lighting.
- Check that rugs are flat and secured.
Lighting and maintenance
Good lighting prevents more problems than almost any other change. Pair it with routine maintenance so small issues do not pile up.
